How many times have you searched for that miracle product? That magic item that will create the look you want with ease. With cosmetics being one of the leading consumer industries, there is no shortage of new products emerging that promise to be ‘the one’ but what do you really need?

We spoke to our team of elite industry makeup artists and asked what their favourite items were and why they felt they were necessary in their pro makeup kits. If you have ever seen a makeup artists kit, it’s a little bit like a portable cosmetics counter. Every product in every shade, all quality and all pristinely kept. The temptation to dunk your fingers in to test out the colours can be pretty high but please know, this is kind of like going to the kitchen of your favourite restaurant and sticking a finger in the sauce! For a pro makeup artist, their products are everything so who better to ask what they can’t live without?!

1: Hydro Grip Primer by Milk Makeup £27

Why we like it: This primer can breathe life back into the most dehydrated skin. With extracts of aloe, cherry blossom and even miracle ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and cannabis seed, this primer will leave you with a glow all day long. It is oil free and suitable for any skin type.

Benefits: Primers are a must! Too many people skip the primer before applying their makeup but we believe it is essential to achieving the perfect finish on the skin. It also helps to keep your skin hydrated and allows make up to glide on for flawless blending.

Pro Tip: Makeup Artists suggest using a small amount and letting it sit for around 2 minutes before applying any makeup. You can even mix a small amount with your foundation for that barely there, dewy look.

2: Face and Body Foundation by Mac £27

Why we like it: Sometimes only the classics will do. Face and body has been a cult-favourite of Makeup Artists since its release. Water based and water resistant, this natural looking foundation has a finish that will last all day long. If it’s your wedding day or you’re at a festival in the heat, this product will not let you down.

Benefits: One thing Makeup Artists love about face and body is it’s versatility. It can look very minimal or have amazing coverage as it is buildable making it suitable for all skin types. Being non-transferable with HD capabilities, it is also a great choice for photography.

Pro Tip: After your all important primer, use a foundation brush to buff this into your skin. Start with a small amount and build up as desired.

3: Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer £24

Why we like it: This is the dream in dark circle coverage! A very close second was the ever popular ‘Touché Eclat by YSL’ but this velvety flawless concealer by Nars took first prize with our Makeup team.

Benefits: Infused with vitamin E and grapeseed extract, this actually hydrates under your eyes as an eye cream would, whilst covering those tell tale dark circles. This concealer comes in 30 shades and has the capability to last up to 16 hours. It blends with ease and does not crease.

Pro Tip: All you need is one small dot per eye and it will blend corner to corner with just a few dabs of your ring finger. It is buildable for those insomniacs out there and is guaranteed to have a natural and flawless finish.

4: Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye pencil £16

Why we like it: This product is a semi matte waterproof eyeliner which dries almost immediately after application. Not the best if your in need of correction but fortunately our Makeup Artists do not have that issue!

Benefits: This little gem of a product is great for the waterline as it will not gradually rub off on your eyeballs or bleed onto your lower lash line. It is extremely black and can be smudged if you’re quick! This flexible little product can be used for a range of makeup looks and is super long lasting! Rub your eyes as much as you want to!

Pro Tip: Easy to apply but once it’s in place it dries very quickly so know what you’re going for. We always recommend eyes first in any makeup look so worst case scenario, if you need a minor correction, you won’t have to rub off your whole face!

5: Rodial Microblade Effect Eyebrow Pencil £29

Why we like it: Of all the makeup trends that make their way out to us via Instagram, the Kardashians and the latest red carpet look, eyebrows are by far one of the most coveted. So many of you come into the studio with no particular requests with makeup but very specific instruction when it comes to your eyebrows. Anyone requesting a heavy painted, stencilled look may find themselves having a rather long conversation with their Artist! Eyebrows can tie your whole look together and completely frame your face so it’s no wonder the big 5 has an eyebrow product included.

Benefits: This eyebrow pencil gives you definition without an overly heavy unnatural finish. The end result is full without being full on!

Pro Tip: With small strokes, carefully fill in the sparser areas of your brows whilst defining a shape which follows the natural arch of your brow being careful not to go too far outside of your natural lines!

These are our professionally tried and tested favourites. Try them for yourself and let us know what you think. We love a good makeup success story!
