The key thing to keep in mind when selecting your outfits is coordination. Basically put, you all need to look like you’re going to the same place! Although we’ll shoot four outfits, we always recommend you bring 4-6 changes, because until you see the final images, you do not know which style/look you will prefer on camera. It is not necessarily your favourite look that works best, sometimes the simplest thing like a white top and jeans can look absolutely great in a family shoot.

Another thing to keep in mind is colour. If baby is a nice bright pink, maybe don’t choose a red outfit for mama! Colour clashing on camera does not look great so keep your colours complimentary or neutral. Also avoid too much black in group shots as we tend to lose a little too much detail.

When choosing your looks, think about variety. Go for a couple of casual looks and a couple of dressy ones; some families even go for a little theme that shows their character! Whatever it is, it should be authentic to you and your family.

There are a few variables at play when it comes to family photography. Firstly, if there are a few hair and makeups to do, this of course will add a little time to your session. Also, when shooting a group, the aim is to get as many different pairings and mini groups as well as full family shots and individuals. This can be complicated! Again, it really depends on the size of the family and if there are children, we have to take into account their age. If they are very little, they can be difficult to direct, this can add time to the shoot as photographers will not give up until they get the shots!

All this in mind the entire session will generally last around 4 hours. We totally understand this sounds like a fairly long time if you have babies and small children, however, it easily works with the right preparation and our family shoots generally feel much quicker! We offer a more express style photoshoot as well that focuses purely on photography; these are great for baby photoshoots. However, most families prefer the pampering included with the longer session and make a nice day of it complete with prosecco and nibbles!

Unlike couples and people who arrive solo, a family photoshoot can be more complicated to coordinate. It can be frustrating to massively overrun or go to all the effort of getting people together only to not get the shots you want. Luckily there are a few things you can do to prevent this. One of the main things to do is prep the children. Here are a couple of golden tips below!

• Get your outfits coordinated and prepared in advance and make sure they’re ironed the night before.
• If you have a baby, work your voodoo to get them to sleep before the shoot. Nothing makes a photographer happier than seeing a sleeping baby whilst other family members are in hair and makeup.
• Also getting them fed and changed beforehand is ideal as it avoids any irritability that may occur during the shoot, which of course will allow smoother sailing when getting the shots. It’s much easier to get those all important smiles after a sleep, a change and a feed!
• With small children or family members who do not need hair and makeup, you may prefer to get them to arrive just before the photoshoot. This prevents boredom in the little ones and not to mention some of the gents who do not wish to watch hair and makeup!

We have so many hints and tips to ensure that your family day runs smoothly but it is absolutely necessary to do a little preparation to make sure you do get the results you are looking for, as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

This really depends. To give a straight answer we’d say an average spend would be about £500 – £600 and would include a nice selection of roughly 15 high quality images and prints plus hair and make up for four people. However every family is different and it really depends on what you’re looking for and whether you want just a basic service with some nice family shots or you’d prefer a more complete service that would also include high quality personalised products that you could display in your family home.
